About Me

It's all about finding strength from within. It's about learning from the past, persevering in the present and having the ganas, or desire, to flourish in the future. I'm an American, but I'm also Indigenous, Mexican, French and German and that's a wonderful thing. One can't be anything if one doesnt know who they are. For centuries people have been trying to break through barriers and I've gone and continue to go through them as if they dont exist.

San Antonio Texas Braces For More Heat

posted Tuesday, 16 June 2009

The extreme heat is taking a toll on people's health in San Antonio Texas. Some of the symptoms for heat related illnesses to look out for are:
Any type of dizziness or confusion
If you feel nauseous
Excessive sweating
Muscle cramping

If you experience any of these, you need to get out of the heat immediately and hydrate.

Residents of San Antonio are being asked to help each other during this heat wave by donating fans or air conditioners and checking on the well-being of elderly friends and neighbors.

San Antonians can help senior citizens stay cool this summer by donating a fan at the city's fire stations for "Project Cool," a joint program of the San Antonio Fire Department and Community Initiatives.

Donations must be 18-inch box fans. The fans can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily at 49 of the 50 fire stations citywide. Fire Station No. 23 at the airport is the only location unable to accept donations. The collection continues through Aug. 31.

Bexar County residents who are 60 or older are eligible for fans.

People interested in receiving one should call the United Way help line at (210) 227-4357 or dial 211 from a home phone. The help line is active on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Health Heat Tip recommendations to help residents weather the summer heat:

If you don't have air conditioning, keep your shades drawn with windows slightly open to provide ventilation
Keep lights off
Avoid using your oven
Take a cool shower or bath periodically
Use cool towels and washcloths for temporary relief
Drink lots of water or natural juices
Avoid alcohol, coffee and soda
Wear loose, cotton clothing.

Keep cool San Antonio and don't forget to watch out for your neighbors, especially the elderly.
