Following last year's successful Black In America documentary series, CNN turned its cameras on America's Latino community with the two-part documentary series Latino In America premiering last night and ending tonight. I'm sure if you missed it, they'll show it again as they did with the other documentary. Latinos In America, was hosted by CNN personality Soledad O'Brien, and was to focus on the growing U.S. Hispanic population and the pertinent issues that face the Latino community.
Well here goes. After watching the documentary, I personally feel that the majority of issues focused and furthered the stereotype view of Hispanic people held by non-Latinos. Again, this show focused on negative stories, which is by any means the norm for Hispanics, neither are the millionaire stories. Where were the success stories of average Latino Americans? The doctors, lawyers, policemen, firemen, bankers, business owners etc.. Where is their story? Many have come from the same, experienced the same environment and achieved their goals. This is the Latino community America must see and be heard from. Instead I feel this documentary simply added fuel to the fire of those who fear their extinction in America.
Hispanics have changed America by introducing their cultures into the American lifestyle such as food, music, celebrations, and beliefs too. America has taught us that we have the opportunity to fully develop personally, intelectually and financially without giving up our heritage. Yes we can have the best of both cutlures. America is a special mixture of several backgrounds and experiences that allow us to overcome any difficulty and see a positive side of life. Tell the story of those who have broken through the barriers and stereotypes, those that have begun to pave the way.
